Known as the “green and blue” city, Nantes factors nature into urban development by safeguarding its natural spaces and biodiversity. It is also features the only Natura 2000 zone in Europe, Petite-Amazonie, located in the city centre.The city is home to over 100,000 trees and almost 3 hectares of flower beds. The numerous parks and gardens dotted across Nantes include the Jardin des Plantes – a botanical garden with a wide range of species –, the Parc de Procé – a favourite with joggers and families alike –, the Jardin japonais de l’Ile de Versailles and, last but not least, the newly developed Parc des Oblates, overlooking the Loire.
Near Nantes: the beaches, especially the resort town of La Baule, is only a short motorhome drive. You can also travel to the beach at Pornic, a very beautiful town and much less of a beach resort than La Baule. The salt swamps at Guerande, where Breton sea salt is harvested, are worth a visit, as well, and feature an exhibit on the salt-harvesting process.
Summers are fine in Nantes. If it happens to get hot, a trip (or dip in) the Erdre river, or just stroll the Japanese gardens on Nante’s river islands, the Ile de Versailles or Ile de Nantes.
