Driving USA: Tips – Each state in the USA has different driving laws. If you drive in the USA, remember that each of the 50 states has its own set of traffic laws and regulations. Fortunately, most of the laws are the same, but some states have slightly different rules. When you rent a motorhome or car, you should ask the agent if there are any special driving rules in that state. When driving in multiple states, check a tour book or the internet for any special driving rules in each stateyou will be traveling in.

Minimum driving age – The minimum age for driving is 16 in most states but some states will not allow unrestricted driving until 18. Some car rental agencies refuse to rent a car to any person under 25 years of age. Other agencies will rent to young drivers but require an added surcharge. Some rental agencies in the US will not rent to drivers over 71 years of age.

Driver Licence USA – You are entitled to drive in the United States for one year with a foreign license as a visitor, provided your license is from a country that is part of the UN Convention on Road Traffic and is written in English. If not, you should apply for an international driving permit in your own country and always carry both the permit and your original driver’s license on you. Driving in the United States?

Maximum speed limits in all states – Speed limits in the United States are set by each state or territory. Speed limits are always posted in increments of five miles per hour. Some states have lower limits for trucks and at night, and occasionally there are minimum speed limits. Most speed limits are set by state or local statute, although each state allows various agencies to set a different, generally lower, limit.
The highest speed limits are generally 75–80 mph (121-133 km/h) in western states and 70 mph (113 km/h) in eastern states. A few states, mainly in the Northeast Megalopolis, have 65 mph (105 km/h) limits, and Hawaii only has a maximum limit of 60 mph (97 km/h). Portions of the Idaho, Montana and Nevada (after October 1, 2015, for both states), South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming road networks have 80 mph limits. For 13 years (1974–1987), federal law prohibited speed limits above 55 miles per hour (89 km/h). From 1987 through December 8, 1995, an amended federal law prohibited speed limits above 65 miles per hour (105 km/h).

Road signs in the United States – In the United States, road signs are, for the most part, standardized by federal regulations, most notably in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and its companion volume the Standard Highway Signs (SHS). There are no plans for adopting the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals standards.trafficSigns usaTwenty-three states along with the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico use the manual without any alterations, 20 states have adopted it in conjunction with a supplemental volume, and seven states have a state version in substantial conformance to the MUTCD.There are also localized versions that are used in large cities such as New York City which use a naming system compatible with the MUTCD and/or state supplement. The MUTCD and SHS establish seven general categories of signs for road and highway use.
